Myst follows the journey of the Stranger, an anonymous person who uses a magical book to travel to a mysterious island. It's frustrating because underneath all the sloppy visuals and mechanics there's still a great gameplay experience - the problem is that all the bad stuff prevents you from ever enjoying it. Muddy, low-resolution graphics, crackly audio and absurdly poor controls all mar what was once a truly superb game.

Revered by game critics across the world in 1993 - not to mention the best-selling PC game for the nine years that followed - Myst's impressive legacy has now been desecrated with this absolute abomination of a port. Sadly, Myst for the 3DS sits all too neatly within this horrid, seemingly ever expanding sub-category of ported games. After encountering an increasing number of issues, you gradually come to the realisation that the publisher wasn't looking to pay tribute when porting across this classic title you once cherished so much, but rather it was simply trying to play on your nostalgia and make a quick buck in the process. You then try using the new control system, but it's just so poorly implemented and doesn't offer anywhere near the same level of accuracy as the original version did all those years ago. However, when you take a look at the screen and notice that the developer didn't bother to improve the visuals - making it a horrible blurry mess when experienced on today's advanced systems - you start to think that something is up.

The MAC version of MYST:ME is far and away the best version, but we're stuck with the windows version unless someone wants to port the MAC version's engine to Scummvm. But then you play it, and you're taken aback: this isn't as good as you remember! Nostalgia has a habit of masking certain imperfections, but it's fine because you expect the developer to optimise the game for the hardware on which it's now running. (Those two video issues can be easily fixed by subbing in the equivalent files from the original windows version of MYST). Have they fixed any of the bugs present in the original windows version of MYST:ME? Such as the Cyan logo music being clipped, or the opening book video having the front cut off due to corruption? (That's a real big one.) The Mowhawk version of MYST:ME has a lot of issues compared to the original windows release, and it seems like a good opportunity to fix some of the more glaring ones with the current version. Putting it in between the logos is sacrilege.

That menu looks really bad, and I'm not sure that's it's needed at all. I agree it's a real bad choice for the default. This was the default behavior for MYST:ME in Scummvm, but you can disable it from the Scummvm launcher. But it still has the very ugly green/black ScummVM menu overlays for options, save/load, etc. It's in better shape than Myst: it doesn't have the mouse cursor issues, and the menu is "tasteful" (very close to the original Riven menu), and the logos play after starting a new game, not before the menu. I assume it's like this too?Įdit: I checked out Riven. I'm being very picky here, but we're talking about preserving a classic game! This feels a bit like messing with Star Wars. There should be an option to keep it at the original size (or an exact multiple thereof). I'm still not really a fan of the images being stretched to fit the entire screen. The mouse cursor sensitivity is too low, and has an awful white outline around it.

I couldn't save the game using the list view had to switch to the grid view. (The original Myst Masterpiece included this video on the disc, but it was never hooked up in the game.) It feels very weird with the wind sound effect behind it. When you click the Myst book linking panel, it plays the full-screen Myst Island flyby, which kind of ruins the flow of the opening of the game IMO. starting up Myst will never feel the same again. Having the Red Orb / Cyan logos before the menu, and the Myst intro after clicking "New Game". It has a main menu for the first time ever ( seen here).
